What is the speed limit in Ecuador?

Ericka & Stefano

If you plan to drive in Ecuador, you should be aware of the speed limits in the city and highways.

The speed limits vary depending on the type of vehicle, however we’ll focus on light vehicles and motorcycles.

In Ecuador, there are maximum speed limit and moderate range limits. There is a fine if the speed limit is exceeded in each category.

Speed limits for light vehicles

For small cars, motorcycles, and similar vehicles:

  • Urban areas: The maximum speed limit is 50 km/h (31 mph), with the moderate range being between 50 and 60 km/h (31 to 37 mph).
  • In the perimeter sector: The maximum speed limit is 90 km/h (56 mph), with the moderate range being between 90 and 120 km/h (56 to 75 mph).
  • Highways: The maximum speed limit is 100 km/h (62 mph), with the moderate range being between 100 and 135 km/h (62 to 84 mph).
  • Highway curves: The maximum speed limit is 60 km/h (37 mph), with the moderate range being between 60 and 75 km/h (37 to 47 mph).

In addition, the maximum speed limit in school zones is 20 km/h (12 mph), while it is 30 km/h (19 mph) in residential areas.

Speed limits for public transportation

We are aware that you are not going to drive a public transportation bus, but knowing the rule will allow you to call out a bus driver who violates it (if you are traveling in Ecuador):

  • Urban areas: The maximum speed limit is 40km/h (25 mph) and the moderate range is 40 to 50 km/h (25 to 31 mph).
  • In the perimeter sector: The maximum speed limit is 70km/h (43 mph) and the moderate range from 70 to 100km/h (43 to 62 mph).
  • Highways: The maximum speed limit is 90km/h (56 mph) and the moderate range from 90 to 115km/h (56 to 71 mph).
  • Highways curves: The maximum speed limit is 50km/h (31 mph) and the moderate range is 50 to 65km/h (31 to 40 mph).

Believe us: when a foreigner complains, the drivers obey.
